AK Reads

There's a new Apex Magazine out, featuring a new Beauty & Dynamite essay ("Here Lies an Era"), and me reading my flash fiction horror short "Foiled." (run time: 3:08)

It's my first time, but I hope to do a lot more readings in the future. Let me know what you think!

From Pages to Pavement

For those of you keeping up with my new running hobby (heck, *I* can barely keep up with my new running hobby), my essay "From Pages to Pavement" is now live over at Fantasy Magazine. Trace the insanity of how an author's mind goes from "I can finish a novel!" to "I can run a 5K!" Leave me some encouragement in the comments there...I can use all I can get.

My first 5K is this Saturday. Wish me luck!

Apex Book Company has a really cool lottery going on right now -- including this one for a bunch of my books and some bonus swag.

One ticket for $1.00 -- ten tickets for $8.00. Go on. You have a dollar. I know you do.
(Did I mention all the books are signed?)

Jason is also adamant about leaving up my pin-up girl shot (the one I used to have on my Twitter profile). Which is totally fine with me. But he is NOT allowed to put it on the Apex calendar. Nope. No way, mister. I don't care how persuasive you think you are.

I like this one from yesterday of me and my new friend author Ally Carter:

You are now ded from cuteness. Ur welcome.

The Still, the Storm, and the Geek

Due to some technical difficulties, the Fantasy magazine con reports didn't go up as immediately as we sent them. Day Two is live now. I'll let you know when Day Three hits newsstands.

If you're jonesing for more, "The Still & the Storm" -- my new Beauty & Dynamite essay --  is now up, along with the latest issue of Apex magazine. Yes, it's true that the online mag is going on hiatus, but I'm still commissioned to put a few tricks up Jason's sleeve, so be sure to keep watching the skies.

And here it is, your Lee Pic of the Day:

Proof that hanging out with me at conventions really is *THIS* much fun. (Miss you, Kit!)

I signed all Jason's Beauty & Dynamite stock...and I had lots of time at the table while he was gone, so they've all got my famous, multicolored, one-of-a-kind, decorated & doodled signatures.

Meet Alethea Kontis, a self-proclaimed Genre Chick whose life is an adventure that tears through these pages like a hurricane. Carrot-a-day cancer cures and Murphy as a guardian angel (yes, that Murphy, the guy with all those irritating laws) are just a part of the daily routine for the Incredible Whirlwind of Beauty and Dynamite, the force of nature masquerading in human form. Through essays, poetry, and commentary from family, friends, and famous authors alike, a world of Blood Oaths and road trips, broken hearts and mended cars, comes alive with the strength of one woman's conviction that the world is there to be befriended. You have now been introduced. Let your adventure begin.

Don't forget, you can always get the pretty-picture-filled hard copy straight from the publisher. (He might even have some signed ones left, if you're lucky!)

Demon Lee

Linebaugh Library will host the Bleeding Hearts Club at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 14. Whether you're a fan of Stephenie Meyer's Twilight series, Charlaine Harris's Sookie Stackhouse series, Laurell Hamilton's Anita Blake series, or the classic Dracula, join us to talk about all things vampire. Stoker-nominated Alethea Kontis will lead the discussion about our favorite vampires, vampires in fiction and on the screen, and the mystery and history of vampire lore. Kontis, a Murfreesboro resident, has written a variety of fiction and nonfiction, including the short story "Blood and Water" -- a re-telling of "The Little Mermaid" involving a vampire and pirates. Kontis has been long-listed for the 2009 Bram Stoker Award for Superior Achievement in Nonfiction for her book Beauty and Dynamite. This free program will be held in the Linebaugh Public Library Reading Room. For ages 13 and up.

For more information, call 893-4131 or visit www.linebaugh.org. Linebaugh Public Library is located at 105 W. Vine St. in Murfreesboro.

Bookstore Heaven

Book Girl

It's official -- Sherlock's Books is my new favorite bookstore. It helps that it's only about 20 miles from my house, a lovely, backwoods, straight-shot, non-interstate drive. And doing it mid-November when all the leaves are changing -- well, whichever ones didn't just turn brown and fall already due to yet another heat-lamp summer -- it was a pretty picture regardless. The building is HUGE, the staff is sweet and approachable and NOT annoying, there is a lovely restaurant and coffee shop with plenty of seating, and the theatre room is fabulous. You can even rent it! For $100 you get 3 hours with the projection screen, two homemade pizzas, and 3 2-liter bottles of soda. Birthday Party, Date, or Viva Pinata marathon -- your choice. There's also a nice hoby section in the back for all you guys into model car building.

And did I mention the drag strip being built in the back? And the free wi-fi? And the natural light?? Oh goodness, the natural light...all those windows...swoon...

The signing was wonderful. Thanks to everyone for coming out, and the Music City Romance Writers for being so hospitable to this Little Misfit. I will have to attend one of your meetings soon, so I can get all the books signed that I forgot to bring!

And if you live within a 100-mile radius of Lebanon, TN, you MUSTMUSTMUST check out Sherlock's Books. I have a feeling I'll be a frequent visitor on the weekends. Every author needs a bookstore to hide in. I'm so glad I finally have one.

Look at all those windows! It was love at first sight.

It's All About You

  • Nov. 3rd, 2008 at 11:14 AM
Hypericon Princess
The November issue of Apex Magazine is live, including the latest Beauty & Dynamite entry entitled: "I Bet You Think This Essay's About You."

A great artist is an artist who has their own distinct voice. Their “certain something” stands out from the crowd. Certain aficionados can glance at a painting and tell a Renoir from a Picasso or a Van Gogh; they can listen to a stanza and tell Handel from Mozart or Chopin. One of my recent essays was referred to as self-indulgent crap. I could not have been more flattered. Hallelujah, I thought, I’ve finally arrived.

Read the rest of the essay here. And be sure to leave a comment telling me how totally full of crap I am!

I am also a total picture-stealer.
You have been warned.

Me & Jenny Hime

  • Oct. 21st, 2008 at 3:14 PM
Princess
The lovely agent extraordinare Jenny Rappaport is currently reading Beauty & Dynamite, and she asked me to please write an essay for the "Book Block" feature on her blog, LIT SOUP. In return, I asked her to say a few words of her own. I didn't realize they were going to make me cry.

Alethea is a magic fairy princess of a person. She is incredibly human and honest; she tells you how things fall like she sees them, all with just the slighest bit of gentility as befits a Southern gal. She has the best accent, one I can't even begin to replicate, but which probably comes from her having been raised in a Greek family that's lived in both Vermont and South Carolina, among other places. She's funny and kind and always spares an ear to listen. Oh, and she's a kick-ass writer too.

She was my gateway drug to Doctor Who, has convinced me to voluntarily eat green chiles in cornbread, and owns the coolest house. She's also the only person in the world who is allowed to call me Jenny-Hime. I love her dearly.

Her book is well worth reading.

Read the rest of Jenny's intro, and my essay, here.
