Episode 6: “Rapunzel” (8:20)

In which the prince is blinded, Rapunzel gets knocked up, and the tears of true love save the day.

“Rampion” is indeed another word for rapunzel. It is a flowering plant native to Europe and western Asia. Its flowers are usually purple, but can also appear blue, white, or pink.

The “ell” is a unit of measurement, roughly the length of a man’s arm. The length of an ell varies from country to country. A rough estimate puts “twenty ells” at about 60-75 feet high.

[Edited with thanks to Brian Dolton, who fixed my bad math.]

Although the individual ells vary, most of them are based on the full length of an arm (fingertip to shoulder) and vary from 36 to 45 inches so twenty ells is more likely to be 60-75 feet - a respectable sized tower, though nowhere near as high as some medieval and later constructions.

Wow...where was my math brain this morning? Duh. You're absolutely right, of course. Which actually helps the story I'm writing...so thanks! :-)
